Sheesh. Well, Figueres was a socialist, essentially. (My wife and wife's family are members of the other main political party anyways!) But CRs are fiercely independent, as witnessed by the lack of headway the Soviets made in CR. During the mid-80s when the US leaned on them heavily, they only gave in so much.

It makes sense that the Soviets made little gain there. CR has a long history of maintaining a middle class (unlike most Lat. Am. countries) hence there was little reason to "foment revolution."

On Chile, despite this supposed revelation, I still think the US's actions there were despicable .
