Comments: Guys and Leather.

Leggings are not 1750's arseless chaps. Leggings are designed to protect your socks-expensive and somewhat hard to come by in the 1700's-especially on the frontier. True cowboy chaps are designed to protect your thighs from rubbing on a saddle when you spend all day horseback. Other modern chaps are somewhat similar to leggings. Snake bite and briar chaps for hunting are of the same basic function as leggings. I have even worn my buffalo leather leggings over jeans when pheasant hunting.

And just for the record, I have never seen a pair of chaps that were not arseless. They have always, as far as I know, been just a pair of pantlegs.
