Help me out here. You know I was never much of a comics reader. I always thought Batmand and Superman were "good guys." What pissed them off so much that they decided to fight each other? Wouldn't it be more logical for them to team up and fight the baddies?

Yo Mike. In "The Return of the Dark Knight" (or was it "The Dark Knight Returns?" I never get that straight), the timeframe was like 20-30 yrs in the future. Bruce Wayne was an old man who had actually retired from crimefighting (but he comes back, natch, hence the series' title), and Superman had pretty much become a clandestine operative of the US government. Their political differences led to a big battle at the end of Frank Miller's series.

You'd like this series -- Miller makes Ronald Reagan look like a 70-IQ asshole throughout! ;-)

"#16. Batman vs. Guy Gardner."

One punch does not a titanic superhero battle make.

But it was hilarious.

Hube,
I stopped reading a couple decades earlier than you did, but we still overlap (and I did love the Batman-Superman face-off ala Frank Miller), but....

I have to make a case for Fantastic Four #40 ("The Battle of the Baxter Building") and the Thing v Doctor Doom battle there....

Gotta be somewhere in the Top 20, especially if you put Galactus and the Silver Dufus up there....

Superman vs. Doomsday still gives me chills. It was the only time while reading a comic I was awed and saddened at the same time. I'm a huge Superman fan so of course I'm biased. I still think Superman #75 is one of the single best comics ever! Comic writers say writing for Superman is difficult due to the fact that he has all of those abilities and very few weaknesses. I would happen to disagree. When you attack his heart he is as "human" as any one one of us. You can feel his ultimate fear in this issue... not being able to protect the planet and the people he cares for with all his being. Again, awesome ish!
