My sister, er, operative, knows her maudlin 70s pop even better than I do. The song is Billy, Don't be a Hero, and (I quote): "Paper Lace did a version that hit #3 on the US and #1 on the UK charts. It was released a few months before Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods released theirs, which hit #1 on the US charts."
