Congrats on your first degree! I grew up with the Masonic youth groups, and I can't say enough good things about the experience.

Again, congratulations, Brother.

I have a Yakima rack on the topper on my truck and then a roof bar for the cab. Works great. I also bought the Yakima gunwale brackets and canoe straps. The gunwale brackets really help to stabilize the boat even more and the straps are quick and easy to use. I don't ever use bow or stern tie-downs and the boat doesn't move.

If you have to load the boat by yourself, Yakima has a thing to assist. But all you really need is a round bar about the same diameter of the cross bars to prop the boat on.

oh, and

I bought the gunwale brackets as well. I'm still using the bow and stern tie downs just for safety. But I have some really nice ratchet ropes for those, so it doesn't take long. It's mainly for safety.

I've seen a canoe go flying off the top of a car on the interstate before. I don't want to be the driver.

Yakima. Buy it once, and never think of it again.

I really wish I had the time and gas to get to IL for your beer tasting!
And we are in the same boat with Little Man....he turned 18 a couple months ago and still doesn't have even a driver's permit yet.
