Comments: Tree Launch

Priceless. A superb launch worthy of Mythbusters, followed by the question about Mom.

love it. I wonder if they are Tech students.

The launch corpuscles are goose stepping through my brain.

We could do this...I'm gonna put a call into, your counterpart, the other Propulsion Engineer.

How pissed do think Shovel Boy would be if we put one THROUGH his roof.

Bwahahahahah...we'll have to do a little trajectory math.

Of course, we'll need to do a Feasibility Study, but I think it's doable.

Cool Runnings!

I started this on the rounds at work back on Monday. It was loved by all.

My brother had noted that they used 32 Estes D-12-0 rocket motors to launch the "tree", but (from what I remember) it looked like a square collection of motors. So the number of motors should be 36 (6x6), 49 (7x7) or 64 (8x8).

Think about what they had to do to make sure that all of the igniters fired the motors at the same time. Now that it an electrical problem.

The launch sure didn't go too high.

Launch didn't go too high ... but it was pretty to watch even so! I think these are a couple of Midwest farmer's kids :) Something about that environment seems to breed engineers.

For added hilarity, do a youtube search for the full-sized port-o-potty launch from a few years ago. It inspired Estes to release a model rocket-sized version.

Rocketeer's Rule #2 - Anything will fly if you use a big enough motor.

That was awesome - the boy's eyes are twinkling and I see motors turning behind them...

I saw this over at El Capitan's place and meant to go back to watch it. It's hilarious! The end is what makes it though those last 5 seconds. I love it.

What does this say about the friends we choose when you, El Cap and I all post this and say it reminds us of our Jawja Blown-Eyed blodging buddies?

(Hint: "Our friends are teh awesome!")

Priceless. I sent it to all my boys.

Since I wasn't supposed to watch it at work, I waited until I got home to verify the number of rocket motors. My count places 3 rows of 7 (21) plus 2 rows of 6 (12) for a total of 33 motors, not the 32 reported in the video.

Didn't look exactly balanced, which may be why it took off at an angle.

A flying Christmas tree would be enough to give any FAA air traffic controller a shit-hemorrhage...
