Comments: Taliban Claims Two U.S. Soldiers Captured

"why did two soldiers leave their base without being part of a larger unit?"
They could have been cut off from their patrol during an ambush. Combat can be strange.
This vet sees this campaign in both Iraq & Afghanistan as exercises in futility. Bring our troops home now.

Buddy of mine works for the UN food programme in Kabul. A couple of times while driving around he has almost been "captured" by Taliban who luckily turned out to be employees of a local "friendly" warlord. Not always easy to tell who's who over there, like in any counterinsurgency. These boys probably just made a simple, yet costly mistake.

David, why not try actually reading the linked article?

'"Two International Security Assistance Force service members departed their compound in Kabul City in a vehicle on Friday afternoon and did not return," ISAF said in a brief statement.'

Nope. No ambush. No firefight. Just a couple of goobers who wandered off on their own.

Let's invoke the 48-hour (at least) rule on this before we start getting excited.
