Comments: Da Highs and Da Lows of Scout Camp

I had to read this because none of my experiences with Scouts have ever *had* highs.

I take that back.
There was the one high that would have read, "When Younger Son fell face first on the piece of rebar that was being used instead of a decent tent spike, he permanently scarred his nose instead of gouging out his eye."
And the follow-up high would have read, "At least The Husband had a first aid kit while not one of the other BOY SCOUT: BE PREPARED leaders had so much as a friggin' Band Aid."

Sorry.
I really hate the Scouts in this area.

No mosquitoes? For me, that would be the ultimate high. I can't stand mosquitoes.

As to the aches and pains ... maybe another visit to a physical therapist would help? It took me two separate visits to get the plantar fasciitis under control, but I am happy to say that something which plagued me for a long time appears to be gone. You might give it another try. :)

You are a far better woman than I. I bow before you, Model of Motherhood. Camping. Oy!

Roses, I'm so sorry your Troop is so sucky. That ruins it. We've got a good group of parents. We have 50+ boys in our Troop and REALLY active parents that for the most part are not controlling. It's boy run. We have our dysfunctions... but nothing like that, Thank Goodness. And funnier still, I think not only do all of us have our own first aid kits, our trailer has a HUGE first aid kit (I just restocked it) and I think 3/4 of the kids carry one.

Peggy- NO MOSQUITOES which is BIG. VERY BIG. That would ruin it all. I do need to see someone about my foot... but I don't have the time. I think I'm wondering too if they'll put me in some boot, at which point... I'll just walk out. I don't do the boot unless something is broken. The key is finding a competent doctor I trust. Other than my guy 45 minutes from here that helped me through my marathon, my batting average for guys I trust with my feet isn't so good...

Leigh- I slept like a rock last night. Sleeping on the ground is highly overrated!

I had to dig up info about the last place I Scout Camped. It is now called the Northwoods Scout Reservation and its a pretty nice place. It even has showers (now).

It was a pure out-in-the-woods camping under canvas (tent, cot, & daddy-longlegs).

Plenty of split wood for the open cook fire. Each campsite came with a full set of cast iron cooking utensils, an open sided pavilion so we could eat out of the rain, and an open wash "house".

The campsite had vault toilets, but not closed box outhouses you find at State Parks, instead they had a Frank Lloyd Wright airy feel to them with good privacy panels but plenty of openness.

I has a nice lake, even if it has plenty of weeds and bass to nip at you as you swam.

We had a not-ready-to-rough-it Scoutmaster who was required to leave his generator and Coleman stove back at his truck as we were required to pack everything a mile back to our campsite. That made life interesting. It was nothing like camping in our nylon tents now a days.
