LOL - OMG I can not imagine coaching a sport. Good for her and too hilarious on the way to call a play!

What is this whole "having a coach" bit?

In fourth grade we were shipped to the JrHi on Saturdays to play basketball. The first two weeks, the JrHi gym teachers taught us the rudiments of basketball including the zone defense.

The third and following weeks we played games against other classes, both from our elementary school and others in the area. Other than the initial instruction by the gym teachers, I don't remember any coaches during our play.

It didn't go too badly as by requiring us to play zone and pass, it kept us from running around like a mob on the court. I got pretty good at lay ups.

Thinking back now, I probably met several of my friends from JrHi at that time, even though I don't remember meeting them. Just a bunch of skinny boys wearing white t-shirts with their school name and team names written on the them using marking pens. (Not very high tech.)

I don't remember anyone having professionally printed team shirts. In fact, it may have been one of the requirements imposed by the gym teachers to keep it uniform.

I suspect that my "team" shirt joined others as a dust rag, otherwise it would have shown up as a birthday or Christmas gift in the years my folks were cleaning out their house before they moved to the condo.

And coaching ... that would have been the six years I hosted/coached the middle school ski club, including teaching several students to ski. I must have been crazy. That will teach me to ask "who is doing it this year?"

Teresa- No way could I coach. At all. Let alone think of something fun like a Mexican play.

Thomas- You have to have a coach for middle school sports. You can just go out and play as a group. And you'd be amazed how many kids do NOT have gym in middle school anymore.

Where I live, you have to take gym unless you can show that you have been in marching band for all your years. And it can't be JV marching band as they don't march enough.

I had gym every semester from 7th through 9th and was only able to get out of it in 10th through 12th by breaking my elbow bad enough that the gym teachers wouldn't take me. That ruined my violin playing too as it was the bow arm.

Oh heavens! Reminds me of my college days and playing intramural basketball with The Business Club. I was the only one who had ever played basketball, and I stopped playing in 9th grade. I think we actually scored points in one game. The one thing I'm proud of is we made one of the referees (who was on the men's basketball team) actually smile. He never smiled, no one on campus could ever remember him smiling, and we had him bending over laughing til he cried. We felt good about that.
