All the divorced fathers I know are paying for college for their children.....in fact some haven't seen their children in years bc the kids are poisoned against the but the divorce agreement stipulates payment for college.

I think this case is not straight forward. When parents seperate get back together etc, there is a huge dis function in the household. Is she a brat or is she actually the result of her own parents bad parenting?

It is normal for 18 yr olds to be difficult. It's the nature of the beast. The question becomes how much have the parents really contributed to this girls issues and are they obligated to help her in some way? In legal terms it would be... But for the parents negligence would this girl be in the position she's in? It's actually really an interesting legal idea.

Btw...When you apply for financial aide for college all the forms, invluding the FAFSA ask your parents income even though technically at 18 you are a legal adult. It is expected that you will get parental help, especially if your parents still claim u as a deduction.

Elise: I think most "brats" are the result of some form of parental disfunction. But if these parents, like many others do, managed to work things out and got back together, not to mention did what they say in the article (like private schooling), then this girl has NO legal basis (not to mention moral) for her claim.

How can a judge objectively rule on this supposed "negligence?" This child was not wanting materially for anything. Are we going to let children sue because they went through some emotional damage as a result of a parental separation/divorce? If you want no better way to destroy the family quicker than ever, then just give kids to the right to sue as this girl is doing. Watch the birthrate in this country plummet like a stone.

We'll the judge basically threw the case out today. Said it undermines parental authority.

Part of my thinks parents need to be held more accountable. Think of it this way. If this girl can't take care of herself she then goes on welfare. Now who should b responsible for that, the taxpayer or the parents who raised her?

FYI-just thought it was an interesting idea. I think it actually says a lot about society and the messed up " concept of when adulthood begins in this country... 18 for contracts, voting, soldiering but no drinking until 21. A big beef of mine.

The judge scheduled another hearing for April 22 to make a ruling on college payments and costs. I'm not certain how state laws differ with regards to child emancipation; I'd be shocked if in NJ parents are legally liable to pay for college. Where would it end? Could a kid sue his parents even if they didn't have the means -- on the grounds that "they should have planned/saved better"?

In my own state a kid is technically on "his/her own" at 18; I ceased child support payments after my daughter's HS graduation, but this didn't mean much as she began college a couple mos. later. My lawyer, in the overall wrangling about the end of child support and possible alimony payments, made it clear to me that parents are not legally bound to pay for college costs -- unless it is stipulated in an agreement. (But I never used college payments as "leverage" in my own legal tussles as my relationship with my daughter is terrific, and I've been saving for her college costs since she was born.)

That all being said, I TOTALLY agree with what you say about the concept of adulthood. To add to the list you noted, now, with ObumbleCare, you can be twenty-six and still be carried on your parents' insurance. There's too many gray areas, absolutely.

It's funny that this is coming the same week that my parents kicked my sister and her boyfriend (definitive examples of the self-entitled Millennial brats) out of the house (they moved back in last week) for their general immaturity and trying to take over the house. I hope they haven't heard about this story and don't get any ideas.

Why am I note surprised that the old hipsters produced little unique snowflakes that expect the world be handed to them as their due. My parents taught me that little was owed me and my job was to earn what I required based on what they taught me.

They did their job as parents well. These hipsters are failures.
