XP has a decent program built in. Windows movie maker. I have seen some pretty impressive stuff made with that program. You might also find some freeware progs at

I, personally, use Pinnacle's Studio 9, which pretty well suits just about every video editing purpose I have and then some.

Though I guess I'll really have to go with Jack here; if you're not looking to shell out the big bucks for a program that has more stuff than you'd probably need, go for Windows Movie Maker.

I don't like it much, but it comes with XP and will easily do everything you described.

Thanks Baby Brother for posting this for us. Please, make sure to thank all you blog buddies out there for all the help. You can update everyone by letting them know that (though he didn't know) Chuck won the prize. Hubby went out and bought Pinnacles Studio Plus on Sunday. He is at present time still playing with it to make the windows movie's and the "new" program play together. I can't wait for the part where he tries to dub the music in. (I've looked it up in the manual already. lol)
The critter on this computer tends to make things really interesting. One of the old ones. May be about time to get a mouse trap. see ya later. Love ya!!
