By the way, the pod in podcasting did come from the iPod. From what I can discover, the concept for podcasting was first discussed in 2000, but the term podcasting was not coined until 2004.

No, the iPod is not required to listen to podcasts, but it was the most popular device to use to listen to the downloaded audio. So, that is where the pod came from. Atom feeds (as well as RSS feeds) of audio or video are also called podcasts.

Personally, I think it is a terrible term. Nothing is broadcast and a iPod is not needed. What a perfectly descriptive term. Might as well name it george. Then, everyone could spend years deciding on what that acronym stands for.
