I think its an excellent plan. People hate change. Hanging back and watching, gathering data, and then changing what's broke always works.

Trust is big when coming into a new job. They need to trust you.

Yeah, best to give it time - let them talk to you without directly asking if there are problems that need fixing... you'll find out more and better info if it isn't under pressure. Glad the new job is looking so good!!!
