One thing about the Western Union Army under Grant and later Sherman. They sure covered a lot more of the country that Army of the Potomic every did. Joe Johnston declared Sherman's Army to be the equal of Caesar's Legions and with good cause.

Considering they were light artillery (and therefore employed near the front) and through the war saw only 18 dead due to disease, I'd have to say Generals Grant and Sherman employed them rather effectively.

I have that print in my own home (one of a pair of reprints of famous Kurz & Allison prints), but as a Georgia native, I have to say that Kennesaw Mountain looks NOTHING like that.
